Character Name: Dr Kureha
Fandom: One Piece
Character History:
The world of One Piece deals with pirates, the navy, governments, rebel army, and mostly anyone else that want to do something for some reason. It’s about a world where pirates explore various islands, and each island is pretty much it’s own world. For pirates, they sail through the Grand Line to find their dreams and the most awesome treasure of all, One Piece. But not everyone is looking for that awesome treasure, or don’t like sailing at all. There is an island within the Grand Line where it snows every day. It’s like a winter wonderland, where they say there is only one doctor and she’s a witch.
A couple years ago, there was a Kingdom on Drum Island ruled by Wapol. Wapol was the worst king! He was selfish, greedy and acted like a child. Out of the blue he decided to exile all doctors as a new law and kept twenty to himself, the Isshi-20. There were two doctors left that refused to follow the king, they were Dr Kureha and Dr. Hiluluk. They became wanted criminals and were hunted down by the guards when given the chance. At that time Kureha would sneak into villages and made uninvited house calls. If the person was sick, she would walk right in. As for payment, it would be far too much like supplies of whatever she was low on and money on top of it. To the people, she was in a way, a pirate.
Kureha knew Hiluluk was dying and treated him the best she could. There was no medicine in the world that could cure his disease. Hiluluk eventually told her about a reindeer that lived with him who ate the human-human fruit, Tony Tony Chopper.
When word spread about Wapol’s doctors fallen ill, the Isshi-20, Hiluluk wanted to answer the call. Kureha warned him it might be a trap. He didn’t care and told Kureha to help finish his project which he had worked on for years and to teach Chopper about medicine. When Kureha heard his requests, it felt like he was taking advantage of his death. Kureha didn’t buy it and kicked him out. Then she remembered something that puzzled her. So she went to Hiluluk’s place to confront him. He wasn’t around, but Chopper was. Chopper told her how he cured Hiluluk’s illness happily which puzzled the doctor. When Chopper showed what he used to cure him, Kureha went in rage and punched him a couple times. What Chopper gave him was a poisonous mushroom, but Chopper thought it was a cure-all mushroom. It made sense; Hiluluk was about to die. He was on his way to save the Isshi-20 and left his will with Kureha. After Hiluluk’s death, Chopper raised his flag in the air and begged Kureha he wanted to learn to be a doctor. Kureha accepted him and thus trained Chopper all the knowledge she had. From there, they became a duo.
Years has passed until the island was raided by a group of pirates, Blackbeard. Because of Blackbeard’s raid, the king Wapol fled the island along with his soldiers and the Isshi-20. The island was left with only one doctor and it was Kureha. After the island calmed down from the raid, Kureha and Chopper moved into the caste where Wapol once lived. They made a home up on top of the mountain shaped like a drum, and it was also the place where their friend Hiluluk died. From time to time, the duo traveled to towns and visited anyone who were sick. It was difficult to reach Kureha, so the people hoped she’d come down and visit. Her reputation remained the same, and with Chopper it added more fuel to her ‘Witch’ status, to have a monster by her side.
With Wapol gone, the island became a nameless kingdom without a king. The people enjoyed it for a few months, and worked together to make a better kingdom. Then the Straw Hat crew came. They were pirates in need of a doctor. With one doctor available on the island, only three adventure up the mountain to get help from her which were Luffy, Sanji and Nami. After a long trail up the mountain, both boys were bruised, broken, and frostbite. But the real crucial one was Nami with an infection. Kureha and Chopper dragged them into the castle for treatment. After all three members were taken care of, the ex-king Wapol climbed the mountain to claim his castle and kingdom. Of course Kureha and Chopper weren’t going to let that happen. When Wapol ordered them to step away, they both refused. Then it became a battlefield in front of the castle. Kureha allowed Chopper to fight along with Luffy and Sanji to defeat Wapol. But when Kureha saw Sanji wasn’t completely healed, Kureha stepped in and made sure he didn’t fight. Kureha watched the battle while sitting on top of Sanji’s back.
When the battle was over, Drum Island cheered. Wapol was finally down for the count and the people didn’t have to worry about the selfish king’s raid. While people were celebrating, Kureha overheard Chopper talking with Luffy and agreed to go on an adventure with him and the crew. Kureha already packed Chopper’s medicine bag. When Chopper confronted her about his departure, Kureha chased him out with knives and weapons to encourage him to leave the island. After Chopper got away from Kureha with the rest of the Straw Hats, he looked back and saw something. Hiluluk’s life work came to life, Kureha’s going away present for Chopper, a cherry blossom color lit the sky. Kureha shed some tears as she watched him go with a smile.
’Have a safe trip, my stupid son.’
After the Strawhat crew left, Kureha and Dalton talked. She was then informed of Monkey D. Luffy’s bounty on his head. At some point in her life, Kureha knew about Gold D. Rodgers and met him at one point. He who was king of the pirates and knew about One Piece. When Kureha saw Luffy’s bounty, she stated that her son was with a dangerous man. Just like Rodger’s, anyone with the middle name of D was known as the ‘Will of D’, which were meant to shake the world. This was the only time in the series this was mentioned.
A couple months has passed since Chopper left with the crew. The island finally has a kingdom name, Sakura Kingdom, tribute to Hiluluk’s work, with Dalton as their king. Kureha still lived up in the castle and Dalton remained close to the people. Her and Dalton became close friends, or at least keep in touch. She got herself a lapahn, a man-eating rabbit, to ride down the mountain (not trying to replace Chopper) whenever she wanted to make a visit. Whenever there were news about the Strawhats or Chopper, Dalton would call her down. No matter where Chopper was, Kureha was watching and reading about his journey.
Character Personality:
Dr. Kureha was referred to as a witch for several reasons. First, her eccentric behavior, especially towards her patients. She would be violent to her patient if they didn’t follow her order. She held a knife towards Nami’s neck when Nami tried to leave before she recovered. Next was when she checked for pain. Kureha would ungently touch inflammation areas. She also would knock her patients out, literally, with Chopper’s help and not use a drug. Next she was about 139 years old (141 later in the series) which was abnormal. Finally, whenever someone called her old or hag, she planted their face against a wall. She has done this a couple times with Sanji and sent Zoro flying outside. Also, she has high tolerance to the cold and dresses loosely trying to keep herself looking young, or try to, when everyone else are bundled up for the weather. She was also described by Hiluluk as a thieving doctor, because of her outrageous prices for medical attention.
As a doctor, Kureha is a realist. She doesn’t leave until the patient was well taken care of. She refused Nami to leave for that matter. She would even threaten the person long as they remain in her care. Even during the Wapol fight, when Kureha saw Sanji’s spine would get worse, she stopped him. She maybe greedy but she kept her Doctor’s oath, patients are her priority. Just as she explained to Chopper how not everything could be cured, thus the reason why doctors exists. This is the reason why she teached Chopper the proper way of medicine instead how Hiluluk’s sham medicine.
Despite her witch persona, Kureha does have soft spot. When a patient said ‘thank you’ to her after the treatment, Kureha said that was a nice tip. She even reduced the 50% of access she wanted to 49%. She encourages people after they feel well ‘remember that happy feeling’. If there was someone sick she knew, she doesn’t ignore it, but also gives the person a chance if they want her help or not. Then there was Hiluluk, who hung out with her on occasions. Kureha kept the door open for him knowing he would die (even though she reminds him of that). After Hiluluks death, Kureha was depressed. She eventually respected his wish and adopted Chopper. Over the years training Chopper, Kureha considered him as a son. When she knew it was time for Chopper to leave, she even prepared his stuff before chasing him out. That was Kureha’s tough love, she knew he wanted to go and made sure he went.
Kureha doesn’t like to show her soft spot, she kept it hidden. When she knew Hiluluk was dying, she made remarks probably knowing when he may croak, which may not be for a while. But when she knew he was about to die any moment, Kureha fell depressed. She even beaten up Chopper because partly it was his fault. Then when it was time for Chopper to start his adventure, Kureha chased him out with weapons. She felt that was better than a sobby moment.
Then there is Kureha’s phrase she loves to say. “Want to know why look so young?” She would say something similar to that in the beginning of a conversation, or to shut people up.
Kureha wasn’t very social with the people, unless it was for business. This was cause of her attitude and the exile Wapol enforced. Anyone younger than her she referred to them as kids; annoying, crying, whining, etc. Kureha felt more adult than the villagers. This is probably why she could be bossy at times. Even after Wapol left, Kureha didn’t make effort to join the town because she had Chopper.
Powers and Abilities:
Kureha has a great deal of medical knowledge as a doctor. She has kept herself healthy for more than 140 years and well fit for her age. There were even some illnesses that should no longer exist and Kureha knew well. Like when Nami was bit by a tick. That tick was suppose to be in the prehistoric days. Kureha had some antibiotic left that would cure a person from this infection in three days versus normal antibiotic that would take up to ten days. With just her index finger, she can take a person’s temperature from their forehead. Because she took an oath as a doctor, Kureha will step in and stop the person from moving if the person is dangering themselves. This is known as ‘Doctor Stop’. She will do whatever is necessarry to stop the person, in one case she stopped Sanji with a kick, and pin them dow.
Besides her medical skills, Kureha’s strength surpasses a normal human. Even with her age, Kureha can toss a person, with one hand, across the room. She has sent Zoro, a swordsman, flying with a punch. Her kick sends concrete from the walls flying and her punches shatters wood. She is capable of carrying tons of weapons on her back which are ridiculously heavy, and running with it. She has chased down Sanji and Luffy with weapons, and has some good aims when she tosses them. Finally the way she dresses, it’s all loose cloths with a blaze jacket. She is immune to the cold. She even made a comment during the Wapol fight she will step in if she has to. To make it short, she is like a super grandma you don’t want to call old.
